Understanding Sammamish's Tree Regulations
Sammamish has strict regulations in place to protect the city’s tree canopy. In many cases, removing larger trees requires approval from the city before work can begin.
Generally, deciduous trees measuring 12 inches or more in diameter at breast height (DBH) and conifers 8 inches or larger are considered protected trees and may require a permit for removal. The city also limits how many trees can be removed each year based on lot size and tracks cumulative removals over a 10-year period. When permits are approved, replacement planting is often required.
Emergency situations are handled differently. If a tree poses an immediate threat to people or property, it can typically be removed right away, though documentation may still need to be submitted afterward.
Because Sammamish’s regulations can be complex, many homeowners work with an arborist to evaluate their trees and help navigate the permit process.
