Restoring an Overgrown Leyland Cypress Privacy Hedge in Bellevue

Overgrown Leyland cypress hedge extending into parking spaces beside a Bellevue multifamily property before pruning and reshaping.

The Leyland cypress hedge before pruning, grown well beyond its intended size along the property’s western boundary.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

A mature Leyland cypress hedge along the property’s western boundary had grown well beyond its intended size and shape. While the hedge provided valuable privacy screening between the property and the neighboring apartment building, its height and increasingly irregular canopy required professional management. The goal was not simply to make the hedge smaller; the client wanted to restore a more uniform shape and manageable height while retaining the dense screening that made the hedge valuable, a balance that matters with mature Leyland cypress, since heavy or poorly planned pruning can expose older interior growth and leave permanent bare areas.

OUR APPROACH

Seattle Tree Care developed a pruning plan focused on containment rather than drastic reduction. Using a bucket truck and powered hedge-trimming equipment, the crew sheared the accessible face and top of the hedge to establish a cleaner, more consistent profile; height was reduced toward its historic maintained level, approximately even with the roofline of the neighboring apartment building. Vines growing through the canopy were also removed, and the crew worked to retain enough live foliage to preserve the hedge’s screening function. Because the hedge bordered an adjacent property and parking area, parking spaces immediately alongside the hedge needed to remain clear so the crew could safely position equipment.

Long mature Leyland cypress privacy hedge bordering the parking area of a Bellevue multifamily property after pruning restored a more uniform shape and manageable size.

The hedge following restorative pruning, shaped to a cleaner, more uniform profile at approximately the neighboring roofline while retaining dense privacy screening.

THE RESULT

The project brought an established Leyland cypress hedge back toward a controlled size and more uniform form without sacrificing its primary purpose as a privacy screen. Rather than allowing continued unchecked growth or attempting an overly aggressive reduction, the work established a more sustainable size that can be maintained through future pruning; keeping an established landscape feature within the space available to it before excessive growth requires much more significant intervention.
