Pruning Mature Cedars for Deadwood and Property-Line Clearance in Queen Anne

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Two mature cedar trees along the south side of this Queen Anne backyard had developed noticeable interior deadwood, particularly within the lower third of their canopies; some lower growth also extended toward the neighboring property and deck. The homeowner wanted the trees professionally pruned to address the visible deadwood and improve clearance along the property line while retaining the mature cedars and their established canopies.

OUR APPROACH

The pruning prescription focused primarily on the portions of the trees affecting the client’s property and neighboring space. Rather than heavily thinning or reshaping the entire trees, Seattle Tree Care recommended a targeted approach: remove visible interior deadwood from the lower canopy and selectively raise the south side to approximately the height of the neighbor’s deck. A two-person crew completed the work in accordance with ANSI A300 pruning standards: removing interior deadwood within the lower third of both canopies, selectively raising the south side to the bottom of the neighboring deck, removing branches containing much of the visible brown interior deadwood, and processing the resulting debris with a chipper truck and wood chipper.

Mature Queen Anne cedar after targeted pruning removed lower deadwood and branches to create clearance from the neighboring property while retaining the upper canopy.

THE RESULT

The targeted pruning addressed the most noticeable deadwood while improving clearance between the mature cedars and the neighboring property. Rather than excessively pruning the trees to create a dramatic visual change, the work was limited to what was needed to meet the client’s objectives, resulting in improved clearance and a cleaner lower canopy while retaining the overall character of both mature cedars.
