Emergency Tree Removal After Two Trees Struck a Burien Home
Two large trees had failed across neighboring residential properties, leaving substantial woody debris around the homes and impacting the client’s residence.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Seattle Tree Care responded to an emergency in Burien after two large trees failed across neighboring residential properties, sending substantial woody debris into yards and causing damage to the client’s home. The failure was significant enough that portions of the tree impacted the structure, damaging the roof/ceiling area and a window. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Seattle Tree Care’s immediate objective was to safely remove tree material from the home and property, manage the unstable debris, and thoroughly clean the affected work areas.
The force of impact penetrated portions of the home’s exterior envelope, resulting in visible interior roof/ceiling damage and a damaged window.
THE CHALLENGE
Once a large tree has failed onto a structure, the work becomes substantially different from a conventional tree removal. Large limbs and trunk sections can be supported unpredictably by the building, surrounding trees, fences, and other debris; removing one piece can change the load carried by another, which makes sequencing critical.
The crew needed to dismantle and remove the failed material without unnecessarily shifting loads or creating additional damage to the residence or surrounding property. The incident also crossed property boundaries: according to project documentation, the neighboring property received substantially more debris than the Seattle Tree Care client’s property, adding another layer of complexity to the response.
OUR APPROACH
Seattle Tree Care mobilized an emergency arborist crew with equipment appropriate for storm-damaged tree material. A bucket truck provided controlled aerial access where necessary, while a grapple truck allowed large and awkward sections of woody debris to be handled mechanically rather than relying entirely on manual movement.
The crew systematically removed tree debris from the house and front yard, hauled the generated material from the property, and cleaned the affected work areas. A tree lying on a house may look stationary, but its limbs and trunk can remain under substantial compression, tension, and bending forces; branches may be pinned beneath other material, and cutting the wrong section first can cause stored energy to release unexpectedly. Emergency tree work requires arborists to evaluate load paths, attachment points, and structural support before sections are cut or lifted; equipment such as aerial lifts and grapples provides additional control while reducing the amount of time crew members must spend directly beneath unstable material.
THE RESULT
Seattle Tree Care removed the storm-damaged tree debris from the client’s residence and property and completed cleanup of the affected work areas. Although the tree failure caused significant property damage, there were no reported injuries. The project demonstrates an important side of professional arboriculture that homeowners may not see until an emergency occurs: the ability to rapidly mobilize trained personnel and specialized equipment when a large tree failure creates an immediate property hazard.
